A gallon of water weighs about eight pounds, and that number alone explains why so many people get their water plan wrong. They pack for a week of drinking water and end up with a bag they cannot lift, or they skip carrying any at all and bet on finding a source along the way. Boiling, filtering, and chemical tablets solve that problem differently, and knowing which one to reach for matters more than owning all three and hoping one of them works.
Boiling
Boiling is the oldest method on this list, and the one most people default to first, mostly because it does not require buying anything. Every prepper with a stove already owns the only tool it needs.
How it is done:
- Bring clear water to a rolling boil, not just a simmer
- Hold it at a full boil for one minute
- Above 6,500 feet, extend that to three minutes, since water boils at a lower temperature the higher you go
- Let it cool before drinking or transferring to a storage container
Why it works: Heat breaks down the cell structure of bacteria, viruses, and parasites past the point where they can survive or reproduce. According to the CDC’s guidance on making water safe in an emergency, boiling handles the full range of pathogens, including parasites like Cryptosporidium and Giardia that chemical disinfectants struggle against. It is the most complete method of the three, and the one I trust most when I have the option.
When to use it: At home or in camp, whenever I have a stove, fire, or camp burner and the time to let water actually cool afterward. It is not a good fit on the move, since it needs fuel and a container, and it does nothing for water you need in the next ten minutes.
Chemical Tablets
Chemical tablets earned their place in nearly every bug-out bag for a simple reason, they weigh almost nothing and take up almost no space, which makes them an easy add regardless of what else is already packed.
How it is done:
- Pre-filter cloudy or sediment-heavy water through a cloth or coffee filter first
- Drop the tablet into the water and cap the container
- Wait roughly thirty minutes for bacteria and viruses with chlorine dioxide tablets
- Wait up to four hours if targeting parasites like Cryptosporidium
- Check the package for pregnancy or thyroid warnings before using iodine tablets
Why it works: The chemical disrupts the cell walls of pathogens over time, which is why speed matters less here than patience. Cold water slows the reaction down further, so a tablet dropped into near-freezing stream water needs more time than the label suggests.
When to use it: As the lightweight backup in a bug-out bag, when carrying a filter or fuel is not practical, or as a second method layered on top of a filter when I am not confident in the water source. It is the method I reach for least often on its own, but the one I never leave home without as insurance.
Filters
Filters have become the most popular option for anyone on the move, mostly because they are the only method here that delivers drinkable water in seconds rather than minutes or hours.
How it is done:
- Draw or pump water through the filter, or set up a gravity feed for larger volumes
- Let the filtered water collect in a clean container
- Drink or store immediately, no waiting required
- Pair with tablets or a UV purifier if the source looks questionable
Why it works: The filter media has pores small enough to physically block bacteria and parasites from passing through, while letting water molecules through freely. That mechanical barrier is reliable and immediate, which is the whole appeal. The gap is viruses, which are smaller than most filter pore sizes and pass straight through a standard filter untouched. In most backcountry sources in the US, viral contamination is a minor risk, but in areas with poor sanitation or after a disaster where sewage may have mixed into the water supply, that gap becomes a real concern.
When to use it: Anything on the move, day hikes, bug-out scenarios, situations where stopping to boil is not realistic. Gravity filters move more water with less physical effort than squeeze or pump styles, which matters if you are filtering for more than just yourself.
Matching the Method to the Situation
I think about it less as which method wins and more as which method fits the moment. Boiling at home during a grid-down stretch, when I have a stove and time. Tablets in the bug-out bag as a lightweight backup. A filter for anything on the move, paired with tablets or a UV purifier if the water source looks questionable. Carrying just one of these and assuming it covers every scenario is the mistake I see most often.
Storing Water You Have Already Treated
Treated water is not automatically safe forever. Store it in clean, covered containers, away from direct sunlight, and treat any water that has been sitting for more than a few days as suspect again if the container was ever opened or handled with dirty hands. A small amount of unscented household bleach, a few drops per gallon, keeps stored water stable longer if you are holding a reserve rather than using it immediately.
Know Your Source Before You Trust Your Method
None of this replaces good judgment about the source itself. Water pulled from a fast-moving mountain stream carries a different risk than water sitting stagnant near livestock, and no purification method makes every source equally safe to drink from. Know your source, match your method to it, and keep more than one option in your kit so a single point of failure does not leave you stuck.
